WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump monitored Hurricane Harvey from his official retreat Saturday, sending a flurry of tweets in an effort to reassure the public that he was fully in control of managing the first natural disaster since he took office.

“Closely monitoring #HurricaneHarvey from Camp David. We are leaving nothing to chance. City, State and Federal Govs. working great together!” Trump tweeted in the morning. In an evening tweet, he touted “Wonderful coordination between Federal, State and Local Governments in the Great State of Texas – TEAMWORK!”

The White House said in a statement Saturday that Trump had a video teleconference briefing on the storm with Vice President Mike Pence, Cabinet members and staff at the White House.

He tweeted a photo of himself in the Oval Office on Friday, with his desktop covered by color-coded papers. He was joined by chief of staff John Kelly and homeland security adviser Tom Bossert.
