Letter: We get what we deserve

We get the government we deserve. I cite as evidence three front-page stories on Dec. 2 in The Columbian. The first: “Record low turnout for November election,” states that only 37.1 percent of the registered voters in Washington voted, a new low. The second, “Senate approves GOP tax bill.” Every nonpartisan economist has spoken out about this bill and how it will reward the richest individuals and corporations. Editorials of The Columbian have written in opposition. Polls show that the majority of Americans oppose it. Yet our elected representatives voted for it.

The third, “Flynn pleads guilty to lying,” tells of a former top Trump administration official who has admitted to lying about his involvement with Russia in the presidential election. President Trump promised to drain the swamp. Instead he is filling the swamp with crocodiles waiting to devour us. His Cabinet is full of people who bought their way into their positions, have no knowledge or skill in the area of their positions, and are opposed to the aims of the agencies they are heading.

Until Americans have enough interest in their own government to study issues, contact legislators, and vote for people who will truly represent them, we’ll continue to have the type of government we now have.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
