Portland — A 63-year-old man faces a first-degree assault accusation after a North Portland shooting Monday morning.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting at 12 a.m. at the 2500 block of North Williams Avenue. They found a man in his 50s suffering from a gunshot to the head, police said in a news release. The victim managed to provide information about the suspect before he was rushed to the hospital, where he remains in serious condition, police said.

The suspect, later identified as Dennis Ray Howie, 63, was found driving his vehicle near Northeast Sacramento Street and Rodney Avenue shortly after the shooting, police said. He was arrested without incident. Both men knew each other, but police released no other details about the circumstance of the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing, and the Police Bureau asks anyone with information about the shooting to contact Detective Jeff Sharp at 503-823-9773 or email jeff.sharpportlandoregon.gov.

Howie was booked into a Multnomah County jail with a $250,000 bail. He will be arraigned later Monday, police said.
