Letter: Adjust Electoral College

Since the election there has been much to say about the electoral process. I’ll throw in my two cents.

I think the creation of the college was a stroke of genius. Taking the selection of our president out of Congress and giving citizens a chance to vote was a big boost for democracy.

However, I would like to see a couple of tweaks. First, since our country is bigger and different from colonial times it appears to me having “electors” is too cumbersome. Keep the number of electoral votes, but have a committee in each state certify their election and send the electoral tally to election officials in Congress, who would announce the results.

Secondly, just as controversial, would be to prorate the electoral vote based on the popular vote in each state. This would make everyone’s vote count and reduce the power of the two parties. As it is now, if you’re in a very minority party in your state there is hardly a value in voting since all the electoral votes could go to the popular vote winner.

Good subjects for a high school civics class.

Wondering how this might work, I took the results from Google and did the prorating. My preliminary results show Clinton edging out Trump. Still shaking my head, I’m double-checking all the percentages and my math.
