Responding to “Get over it, make America great” (Jan. 7, letters, The Columbian) it ends with a plea to bring back common sense. Yes, Donald Trump has won, but people are very scared. By his words and deeds, he’s attacked almost every demographic: Blacks, Hispanics, aged, handicapped, and women are but a few who are fearful of Trump World.
By violating every GOP fiscal tenant California will have (according to their budget office) a 2017 budget surplus. So, the idea that they can “never” pay off their debt is nonsense. While not defending debt per se, debt is a reality. Consider, the United States had its longest depression start the year after Andrew Jackson brought its debt to zero. Historically, the GOP fiscal policy is “borrow” and spend.
Is it common sense to be sexist, racist, or a white supremacist? Or to pack the Cabinet with people whose historical goals have been the dissolution of those cabinets? Or to dismantle the U.S. diplomatic corps by recalling ambassadors before replacements are named? Or denigrating our own intelligence corps while praising a Russian dictator? Or tweeting temper tantrums at 3 a.m.? Or inviting a nuclear arms race? No, but that is the common sense the author of “make America great” is asking us to practice.
How is all this going to make America great?
