Happy Fourth of July — almost! As I write this column, the weather forecast calls for a partly cloudy then mostly sunny Independence Day, so I’m hoping that holds true. Like dear ol’ Goldilocks, I don’t want it to be too hot or too cold — I want the temperature to be just right. That’s not asking for much, right?

I’m sure the Fourth will keep everyone busy with family get-togethers, barbecues and watching the big fireworks display at Fort Vancouver. Now that summer is officially upon us, perhaps in the coming weeks you’ll take advantage of the longer days to stretch out in your hammock and gett in some quality reading time.

I don’t know about you, but I enjoy reading outside. The hummingbirds keep me company — sometimes even zooming in for a closer look as if they’re checking out my reading choice — and the sounds of summer provide the perfect background “music” for a quiet read.

Here’s hoping you can take some time out from your busy summer schedule to grab a book, find your favorite comfy spot, and get lost in the pleasure of reading. As a shout-out (or read-out?) to the upcoming holiday, I’ve spelled out “4TH OF JULY” with the following eclectic list of library materials. Not everyone wants to spend their limited free time curled up with a book, so I’ve included several DVD titles as well. Here’s to the good old summertime!

• 4: “4 Film Favorites: Steve McQueen Collection,” (DVD) (includes “Bullitt.” “Papillon.” “The Hunter” and “Nevada Smith”), Warner Home Video.

• T: “Turner Classic Movies Greatest Classic Legends Film Collection: Judy Garland,” (DVD) (includes “For Me and My Gal.” “The Harvey Girls.” “In the Good Old Summertime” and “Summer Stock”) Turner Classic Movies.

• H: “He’s Got Rhythm: The Life and Career of Gene Kelly,” by Cynthia Brideson.

• O: “One Jump Ring: Endless Possibilities for Chain Mail Jewelry,” by Lauren Andersen.

• F: “Film and TV Locations: Scout Out the World’s Top Spots for Famous Film and TV Scenes,” by Laurence Phelan.

• J: “Jungle of Stone: The True Story of Two Men, Their Extraordinary Journey, and the Discovery of the Lost Civilization of the Maya,” by William Carlsen.

• U: “Ultimate Cruise Ship,” (DVD) PBS Distribution.

• L: “Lincoln’s Lieutenants: The High Command of the Army of the Potomac,” by Stephen W. Sears.

• Y: “You Don’t Look Your Age and Other Fairy Tales,” by Sheila Nevins.
