Letter: Remember meaning of Fourth

By Marlene Wedin, VANCOUVER

I feel for Clark County Councilor Julie Olson, having her house damaged by — you guessed it — illegal fireworks. What happened to the good old “Piccolo Petes,” “black snakes,” spinners and sparklers that I and my kids enjoyed when we were little?

It seems the Fourth of July has become a competition among neighbors — who has the loudest or the highest fireworks? I feel that people have lost the true meaning and value of what the Fourth stands for.

I thank God that I have my independence and freedom to enjoy the Fourth, and to the many men and women who gave their lives for us. If we were at war, you wouldn’t have any choice but to listen to bombs. It could happen here just as in Iraq or Afghanistan.
