Letter: Slow the development in Ridgefield

The city of Ridgefield is at a crossroads. It’s a community of large lot sizes and farms, with a nationally famous wildlife refuge smack dab in the middle of it all. The Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge has been a significant roosting spot for endangered wintering Sandhill cranes, and the farms in the adjacent area have been the source of food for them during the day. This alliance is so significant to the community that the crane is on the city logo.

Development in Ridgefield has been on a fast track recently and there is now a plan to develop an area that includes the Kennedy farm. Cranes feed here, making it a significant link in the chain of habitat. If the development trend continues, cranes will no longer winter here and the only place you’ll be able to see one will be on that city logo.

A big part of Ridgefield’s draw has been its rural feel. To those deciding your city’s future, consider why you are desirable. Learn about the needs and requirements of the surrounding wildlife. Giving in to the allure of money that new development will provide will not add to Ridgefield’s quality of life.
