Save the Date: Arts, crafts, train rides, music and more make for May fun

Celebrate color and energy during the May Day Arts and Crafts Festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today. The festival is hosted by the Ke Kukui Foundation. It features the May Day Court, with the May Day King and Queen and their eight Hawaiian Island princess attendants, wearing their respective island flower lei and colors. There will be hula dancing, food and shave ice, craft vendors and a lei making contest in Gaiser Hall, Clark College, 1933 Fort Vancouver Way, Vancouver. The Chelatchie Prairie Railroad kicks off its season with a Mother’s Day Weekend ride for the whole family. The train carries passengers on a 13-mile round trip through north Clark County, including crossing the Lewis River, with a stop to see Yacolt Falls and passage through a 330 foot tunnel. Reservations recommended. The train rides begin at noon and 2:30 p.m. May 13 and May 14 from Chelatchie Prairie Railroad, 207 N. Railroad Ave., Yacolt. The Southwest Washington Wind Symphony welcomes Pat Vandehey, Director of Bands at George Fox University, to conduct its concert “Spring Song.” This concert celebrates the arrival of spring with animated dances, Latin themes and a musical tribute to the city of Paris by contemporary composers at 3 p.m. May 14 at Union High School, 6201 N.W. PHD Comics creator Jorge Cham and particle physicist Daniel Whiteson are the authors of “We Have No Idea: A Guide to the Unknown Universe,” where they explore why a vast portion of the universe is still a mystery, and explore those mysteries with infographics, cartoons and illustrations. At this Science on Tap at 7 p.m. May 16 at Kiggins Theatre, 1011 Main St., they will introduce their new book and show how the universe is an exciting expanse of mostly uncharted territory to explore. The 28th annual Senior Citizen Prom will be themed “Moonlight in the Tropics” with dancing, food and fun, in honor of Older Americans month. Join Meals on Wheels People for “Whiskey, Wine & Swine” Fundraiser, a dinner and silent auction to benefit the organization’s Washougal Center. Help your pup become a Bark Ranger during a ranger-led outdoor walking tour of Fort Vancouver and the Vancouver Barracks. Designed for visitors and their dogs, the tour begins at 10 a.m. May 20, highlighting the history of dogs at the national historic site, starting outside the Pearson Air Museum’s main hangar, 1115 E. Fifth St. Vancouver. Participating dogs should be friendly with other dogs and people, plus up-to-date on vaccines. The 53rd annual Hazel Dell Parade of Bands is set for 10:30 a.m. May 20, as middle and high school marching bands from near and far will walk along Northeast Hazel Dell Avenue and Northeast Highway 99, along with floats, organizations and clubs. The grand marshal will be Alicia Cooper, reigning Miss Clark County and Miss Washington. The parade starts from Fire District 6, Station 1, travels south along Hazel Dell Avenue, crosses at Northeast 63rd to Highway 99, heading north before ending at 78th Street.
