Letter: Herrera Beutler votes against Earth

We, as a people and as a society, need to protect our planet, now more than ever, with increasing pollution every day. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, does not seem to agree with that sentiment. Her lack of transparency on one of the most critical issues our entire planet faces is questionable, however, her voting record regarding the environment is disturbing. Examples include:

• H.R. 1430. Her vote sided with the GOP’s stance of restricting the use of scientific evidence by the Environmental Protection Agency.

• H.R. 5538. Her vote was toward limiting government’s ability to regulate power plant pollution, slashing funding toward the EPA and blocking its ability to monitor uranium mines; prohibiting funding toward implementing a national ocean policy; limiting the restoration of Chesapeake Bay; and limiting the rules set in place by the Bureau of Land Management, rules that protect against accidents from fracking.

• H.R. 910. Her vote was toward banning the EPA from regulating greenhouse gases.

This trend of voting is a mark of poor judgment and shortsightedness. We need a more progressive politician representing Washington state, as well as the United States, toward having a clean Earth for future generations.
