Tacoma – The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said the death of a high school student who was hit by a car was a tragic accident.

Spokesman Ed Troyer told The News Tribune there is no evidence the 61-year-old woman who was driving was intoxicated when her car drifted onto the shoulder of Key Peninsula Highway and struck the boy Thursday afternoon.

The teenager, a student at Peninsula High School, was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Superintendent Rob Manahan said the school has extra counselors available to support students and staff.
