A Vancouver man who was driving drunk when he collided head-on with another vehicle near the Manor area pleaded guilty Tuesday in the 2014 crash.

Shawn C. Gibbs, 39, was sentenced to 60 days on the jail’s work release program, if he qualifies — which allows him to work outside in the community and be confined when he’s not working — and 30 days on a work crew. He will also be required to spend an additional one day in jail.

Gibbs pleaded guilty to vehicular assault by disregarding the safety of others and DUI in the Oct. 11, 2014, crash that occurred in the 14500 block of Northeast 72nd Avenue, about a mile south of the Manor area.

The occupant in the other vehicle, Sharon C. Gutman, suffered a fractured sternum and concussion, court records state.

A witness driving two cars behind Gibbs said she saw his vehicle cross the center lane while making a left-hand turn and hit Gutman’s car head-on, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

Gibbs told a Clark County sheriff’s deputy that he hit the other car but didn’t know how. The officer smelled alcohol on his breath, and he failed field sobriety tests. A preliminary breath test estimated he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.143. Two additional breath tests found Gibbs had a blood-alcohol level of 0.133, the affidavit states. In Washington, a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 or higher is considered evidence of drunken driving.

In addition to his sentence, Gibbs’ license will be revoked, and he must undergo an alcohol evaluation and treatment.
