Non-league football: The Dalles, Ore. 34, Fort Vancouver 0

Like any football coach, Steve Broussard seeks improvement.

Week to week. Game to game.

With nine more eligible players on the roster than in last week’s season-opening loss, that improvement was seen in many phases in a 34-0 loss to The Dalles (Ore.) on Friday at Kiggins Bowl.

The Riverhawks are in their final season as a Class 5A independent, and needed just eight plays to build an 18-0 first-quarter lead.

But after that, Fort (0-2 overall) settled down.

It shutout The Dalles (2-0) in the second quarter and although it, it saw positives offensively.

The ground game saw progress with fullback Myron Lawrence, who finished with a team-best 26 yards on 12 carries

Its youth stepped up, too. Freshman quarterback Devyn Turner stepped in for the injured Joseph Endonino late in the first quarter, and even though he finished the game 1-for-9 for 12 yards and two interceptions, he kept the offense moving by orchestrating two first downs.

And the defense did its job by keeping The Dalles out of the end zone in the second quarter and forcing two punts.

This week’s three straight indoor-only practices because of poor quality meant back to basic fundamentals in the gymnasium.

“We needed it,” Broussard said.
