Westbound Interstate 84 from Hood River to Troutdale was closed between 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, the Oregon Department of Transportation says.

Both directions of the interstate had been closed between the two cities since Sept. 4 because of the Eagle Creek fire. However, the westbound lanes were opened Thursday. Also, on Friday, the westbound I-84 ramps to Cascade Locks were opened.

Saturday’s temporary closure from exit 62 in Hood River to exit 17 in Troutdale was to allow ODOT to remove large trees endangering the road, the agency said in a news release. The Bonneville Power Administration was scheduled to remove the trees, some of which are located near the Toothrock Tunnel.

“Bringing down the trees could result in damage to road barriers. Crews will be on standby to quickly make repairs, if needed,” the release says, adding, “Sections of the road could close again, if necessary, because of changes in the fire or for road cleanup.”

It is not known when the eastbound lanes will open.

The Eagle Creek fire, which started Sept. 2, has grown to 45,579 acres and is 32 percent contained. Rain is expected Sunday through Wednesday and, as a result, “fire behavior is expected to be negligible,” according to an incident update issued Friday night. However, that update also predicts “weather conducive to sustained fire growth” on Saturday.
