Letter: Approach debt problem wisely

Recently, Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, voted to put the U.S. into bankruptcy by voting against raising our nation’s debt ceiling. She wrote, “We need to stop the excessive spending on our nation’s credit card.”

The spending was authorized by Congress long ago; it’s a done deal. Refusing to raise the artificial debt limit that allows the government to borrow to pay the bill is no different than an ordinary person ordering and eating a restaurant meal, then refusing to pay the check.

It’s time for a change. If our country is going to deal with its debt problem, we need representatives who are financially literate, someone who understands that reducing our debt or even just stopping its growth will require a combination of reducing the growth of spending and increasing government revenue.
