Letter: Support conservation district

By Jim Comrada, Vancouver

I’ve always had a great deal of respect for the mission of the Clark Conservation District. I was not surprised by the Clark County Council decision to not “saddle taxpayers with another expense” (“Conservation district going broke,” April 4, The Columbian). Five dollars per parcel of land and 10 cents per acre — terrible! The nerve of some people to provide a cheap service to help farmers and landowners comply with environmental regulations or install visually pleasing environmental amenities, such as bioswales, or to assist in planning and planting vegetative buffers such as ones used to protect and help restore streams for salmonid populations and reduce the ongoing erosion, and pollution that occurs still today because of developers’ ability to squeak by regulations while reducing habitat. Darn regulations anyway!

Unless you need to hire an environmental consulting firm, here’s a cheap way to help promote and protect habitat and make the world a better place right here in our own county.

They need your help. All of you people interested in maintaining and perhaps even improving the quality of life of our county and its diminishing undeveloped land can be heroes. Crowdfunding is helping people and organizations every day now. Do it today!
