The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the Portland-Vancouver area, which will remain in place until at least Monday night.
Vancouver and the Clark County communities of Battle Ground, Ridgefield, Washougal, Yacolt and Amboy are in for another hot day. Forecasters say temperatures throughout Monday will be somewhere between 92 and 97 degrees.
The weather service issued the advisory about 9 p.m. Sunday; it only cooled into the upper 70s and lower 80s by midnight.
Things are expected to get a bit cooler than Sunday evening, with minimum temperatures dipping to as low as 55 degrees. But urban areas may stay balmy, sticking around the lower 70s.
Officials warned that the limited relief from heat overnight Sunday and Monday has increased chances of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion. People without air conditioning are particularly at risk, they said. Heat stress is also possible for livestock and outdoor pets.
“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sunshine, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” said the weather service’s advisory.
People who work outdoors are encouraged to take frequent breaks in the shade.
Heat stroke “is an emergency, call 911,” the weather service said.
The forecast calls for clear skies and a high of 88 degrees on Tuesday in Vancouver. The temperature will decrease to about 80 by Wednesday and stay there until Friday.
