RV malfunctions, catches fire at Chevron

A 30-plus foot motor home caught on fire in the parking lot of a Chevron station within 100 feet of the gas pumps, and a station employee put out the fire before first responders could arrive.

Clark County Fire District 3 was called out to the station, 16105 N.E. 182nd Ave., Brush Prairie, at 5:02 p.m. Saturday by a staffer, who said the motor home was on fire, according to District 3 Capt. Brian George.

The fire was in the engine compartment and was starting to migrate up to the passenger’s side of the vehicle, George said. The Chevron staffer deployed the dry chemical fire extinguisher and put out the fire before firefighters arrived. When they did, they inspected the vehicle and determined the staff fully extinguished the fire. Nobody was injured in the fire.

There was some singeing and charring in the engine compartment of the vehicle, but George said there’s no way of knowing if that was there prior to the fire.

The vehicle owner wasn’t with the vehicle when the fire started. A station employee told Fire District 3 the man driving pulled in the station because his motor home broke down, and left it there while going to get some parts to repair it. The station employee didn’t know when the driver was going to return.

George said the fire marshal was called, but nothing seemed suspicious about the fire.

“It was a malfunctioning vehicle that had a breakdown and caught on fire,” George said.
