Analysis: Is image of sprawl county’s bad rap?

Hey @sockeye - believe me, I hear you. But to answer your question, what this Columbian reporter was trying to do is help explain why you might not *ever* get to read that "first anchor has been driven" story you're waiting for.

‘Sleep Country Amphitheater’: Concert venue gets in tune with industry trend

@frogfanatic1, @George_Vartanian has it right -- the county gets rent payments from Quincunx, the Amphitheater's operator. So there's no subsidy ... unless, of course, you think that $300,000 a year isn't market rate for a concert venue like that one.

IMO, the rent (which is lower than originally promised, because the county cut Quincunx a break in 2008) should be assessed in the context of the $40 million construction cost. Quincunx provided that out of its own pocket and handed the building to the county.

Powers behind the thrones: Tidbits about local campaign teams

An earlier version of this post inaccurately referred to the job of Tonya Riddell, a prosecutor supporting Tony Golik. This was the result of consulting an unreliable third-party Web site and a miscommunication when I spoke with Golik. The fault is mine, and I apologize.

I've also deleted the "tidbit" related to this, which mentioned that Vancouver Defenders boss Jeff Barrar also supports Golik. Once I'd cleared up that Riddell is a prosecutor, it didn't seem noteworthy that Golik is backed by a prosecutor and a defense attorney.

Who's running? A geek's guide to Clark County's local races

Update: Kimsey calls to add that despite "disagreements from time to time" -- I recalled one public meeting in 2007 about management of county fund balances in which Kimsey was practically dripping disdain for Lasher -- he's "actually quite fond of Mr. Lasher."

"I've known he and his family for 45 years, and Doug is one of the nicest people you'll come across," Kimsey told me. "I went from kindergarten to high school with his younger sister. ... I think if you were to poke around, you would find that I have spent more time talking and working with Mr. Lasher than any of my predecessors or any other elected official in the county."
