PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A government official says militants in northwestern Pakistan attached a bomb to a tanker carrying fuel to NATO forces in Afghanistan, destroying the vehicle and killing a boy who was riding in a van behind it.
Iqbal Khan says Wednesday’s blast occurred when the tanker was just 4 miles (6 kilometers) from the Afghan border in the Khyber tribal area.
Khan, a federal administrator in Khyber, says four other passengers in the van were injured by the explosion. Police are investigating how the bomb was detonated.
Afghan-based U.S. and NATO forces get up to 75 percent of their supplies via routes through Pakistan. Taliban militants have frequently targeted the convoys, although attacks have declined in the last few months.
