WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (AP) — A small crowd greeted the NCAA champion UConn women’s basketball team as they returned home with their second straight title.

About 175 fans waited by a runway at Bradley International Airport as the Huskies arrived from San Antonio, where they beat Stanford, 53-47, on Tuesday night. It was the team’s 78th straight win and second straight undefeated season.

Coach Geno Auriemma joked that crowd would have been bigger but the close game probably left a few fans hospitalized. The Huskies had to rally from a first-half deficit to pull out the victory.

But Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell, who was there to greet the team, said before they players arrived that well-wishers who showed up “are loyal Huskies fans” who never take winning for granted.

A campus pep rally also was scheduled later in Storrs.
