Berdych reaches 2nd round at Monte Carlo Masters

MONACO (AP) — Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic beat Feliciano Lopez of Spain 6-3, 6-1 Monday in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters.

The 10th-seeded Berdych dropped his serve in the first set but broke Lopez five times overall and had seven aces to set up a second-round match against Richard Gasquet of France, who beat qualifier Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Berdych reached the Sony Ericsson Open final last week, losing to Andy Roddick.

David Nalbandian of Argentina also won Monday, using eight aces to defeat Andreas Beck of Germany 6-3, 6-1. Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan, Nicolas Almagro of Spain, Julien Benneteau of France and Philipp Petzschner of Germany also won.
