GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — The recently established Oregon branch of the Honor Flight Network is providing veterans with all-expense-paid trips to Washington, D.C., to view war memorials.

Among the first Oregon vets to take the trip will be Don Daugherty of Rogue River. The 85-year-old World War II veteran will be in a group of 25 veterans traveling to Washington, D.C., on June 17

Daugherty was growing up in Portland when the war broke out. He joined the Navy’s “Oregon Avengers” in June 1942, when he was 17 years old. Daugherty remembers his group as Oregon’s answer to Pearl Harbor. He says they were a bunch of kids but they all knew what they were fighting for and fighting against.
