WASHINGTON (AP) — One of nation’s most powerful union leaders is preparing to step down from his post.
A senior official with the Service Employees International Union tells staffers in an e-mail that longtime president Andy Stern plans to resign.
The message from the official, Diane Sosne, was obtained Monday by The Associated Press. Sosne is a member of the union’s board, and Sosne is president of an SEIU local based in Seattle.
Union spokeswoman Michelle Ringuette says only that Stern plans to address speculation that he would leave the post at the end of his term in 2012. She says an official announcement will come later this week.
