North Cascades Highway reopening delayed

WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) — Avalanche control work has delayed the reopening of the North Cascades Highway.

The Transportation Department had hoped to allow traffic on the highway Thursday, but crews are still busy removing snow brought down in avalanche chutes by explosives dropped Wednesday from a helicopter.

Spokesman Jeff Adamson says 100 inches of snow fell since March 22 when crews started clearing the highway.

The 36-mile stretch of Highway 20 between Diablo and Mazama was closed Nov. 17 because of winter snow over Rainy and Washington passes.
