EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — A prosecutor in the trial of an Everett police officer charged in the shooting death of a suspected drunken driver has told jurors that a fellow officer was astonished when Troy Meade opened fire. Defense lawyer David Allen made it clear Wednesday that he intends to question the actions and memory of that fellow officer.

Officer Meade is charged with second-degree murder in the death last June of Niles Meservey. Witness accounts indicate Meservey refused to get out of his car in a restaurant parking lot. The 51-year-old man was shot seven times.

In his opening statement, Deputy Prosecutor John Adcock said Officer Steven Klocker, who was at the scene, later told investigators he didn’t believe he or anyone else was in imminent danger.

Allen says Meade plans to testify in his own defense.
