SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle Public Schools is closing South Shore elementary school for the rest of the school year as authorities try to determine the source of a mysterious odor that has caused itchy eyes, nausea, rashes and headaches for some students and teachers.

District spokeswoman Patti Spencer said Friday there will be no school for South Shore students next week as the district figures out where to move them. Plans are being developed to house students and staff in a temporary location for the rest of the school year.

The problems first surfaced in January.

Spencer says Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson made the final decision, based on advice from environmental health experts. In a statement, the superintendent says she decided to close the school because “there are too many unanswered questions about the source of the odor.”
