LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Spain striker Fernando Torres faces a race to be ready for the World Cup in June because of knee surgery that will sideline the Liverpool player for six weeks.

Liverpool says the surgery was scheduled for Sunday night and will keep him out for the rest of the English Premier League season.

The team says Torres saw a specialist in Spain on Sunday and was told he “would need surgery on a torn cartilage in his right knee.”
