SEATTLE (AP) — Divers working for the Washington Transportation Department have begun a five-month project to replace frayed and corroded anchor cables on Lake Washington floating bridges.

The cables hold the bridges in place during wind storms.

Crews are replacing 15 of 52 cables on the Interstate 90 bridge and 15 of 58 cables on the Highway 520 floating bridge.

The department awarded a contract to General Construction Co. of Poulsbo for the $4.3 million project.
