Vancouver residents David and Sandy Leach were among 49 volunteers honored Monday at the sixth annual Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards.

Gov. Chris Gregoire held the event at the executive mansion in Olympia as part of Washington Volunteer Recognition Week.

The Leaches have been active volunteers with the RSVP/Volunteer Connections Program since 1994, said program manager Bobbi Casanova.

They have helped “with many community service projects and events, along with being very involved with literacy programs for kids and adults,” Casanova said in a news release.

That includes volunteering with the Clark College Adult Literacy Program.

“They have had multiple assignments from working with individual students to facilitating conversation groups,” Madeleine von Laue with the literacy program said.

“They both take personal and professional interest in their students, helping them build both their skills and self-confidence,” she added. “As a former pastor, David is skilled at mentoring students and providing guidance. Sandy led a conversation group for a number of years for lower-level students and would regularly stay after the group or come in especially to help an individual student.”
