Washington Capitol landscapers try to grow greener

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Ground crews on the Capitol Campus in Olympia have switched from gas-powered trucks to battery-powered vehicles to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

The Department of General Administration says it’s one of the steps the agency is taking in response to Gov. Chris Gregoire’s directive to reduce the carbon footprint of landscaping work.

The Olympian reports crews also are waiting until the grass is 3 inches high instead of cutting it at 1.5 inches, leaving clippings on the lawn and using only organic fertilizers.
