MIAMI (AP) — Home plate umpire Jerry Crawford was struck in the ribs by a foul ball in the seventh inning of Tuesday night’s game between the Florida Marlins and San Diego Padres.

He was replaced by second base umpire Phil Cuzzi following a 10-minute delay with the Padres leading 4-1.

Crawford, who is in his 34th year in the Majors, was also serving as the crew chief. He took the foul tip off the bat of Padres’ Will Venable on a pitch thrown inside by Renyel Pinto and immediately fell to the ground.

Trainers and the other umpires immediately came to his assistance before he walked off.
