ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — Defensemen Karl Alzner and John Carlson have been assigned by the Washington Capitals to Hershey of the American Hockey League.

Thursday’s moves come a day after Alzner and Carlson were paired on defense in Washington’s 2-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens in Game 7 of their first-round playoff series.

That game was the 21-year-old Alzner’s NHL playoff debut. The second-year pro was recalled from Hershey on Tuesday because Capitals defenseman Tom Poti was ruled out of Game 7 after getting hit in the face by a puck in Game 6.

The 20-year-old Carlson was a rookie who played in all seven games against Montreal in the playoffs.

Hershey is competing in the AHL playoffs.
