Prep roundup: Camas baseball slams Union

The Camas baseball team blasted four home runs including a first-inning grand slam from Taylor Williams and defeated Union 12-8 in 3A Greater St. Helens League action Thursday.

The win keeps Camas one game ahead of Columbia River, which beat Prairie 5-2 on Thursday. Union is in third, two games back.

In addition to Williams’ homer, Austin Barr hit solo shots in the second and fourth innings, and Derek Atkinson also hit a home run.

Kurt Yinger had a solid outing on the mound, allowing two hits in five innings for the win. He struck out six.

Union’s Caleb Whalen hit a grand slam in a five-run sixth inning to bring the Titans within 10-8.

Kelso 13, Skyview 3 — The visiting Hilanders pounded 13 hits and clinched the outright 4A GSHL baseball title with a convincing win. Kelso scored three times in the top of the first and pulled away with six runs in the fourth inning. Ian Hamilton went 2 for 2 in the loss for the Storm.

Softball

Union 3, Camas 0 — Mariah Dawson is getting closer to the state strikeout record.

Dawson, a senior, struck out 16 batters in a two-hitter Thursday, leading the Union Titans to a 3-0 victory over Camas.

Alexis Cline drove in two runs with a double and Alyssa Larson added a run-scoring double to account for Union’s runs.

Dawson is 17 strikeouts from breaking the career mark set by former Skyview pitcher Whitney Baker. Dawson, who pitched for La Center as a freshman and a sophomore, now has 933 strikeouts.

Union, ranked No. 1 in the state by the Seattle Times, improved to 15-0, 6-0 in the Class 3A Greater St. Helens League.

Heritage 15, Evergreen 7 — Trailing 4-0 before they had their first at-bat, the Timberwolves rallied with the use of the long ball.

Britney Sorenson, Desirae Cook, and Leila Stutesman all hit home runs to lead Heritage to the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League victory.

Sorenson went 4 for 4 and drove in five runs. She also picked up the pitching win with five innings in relief.

Stutesman had three hits and drove in three runs. Ally Huss was 4 for 5 and drove in two runs for the Timberwolves, who used a 16-hit attack.

Boys soccer

Ridgefield 2, Hockinson 1 — Antonio Tamez and Tanner Kinkright scored unassisted second-half goals to rally the Spudders past the Hawks. Ridgefield improved to 7-0 in the 2A Greater St. Helens League, 9-2-1 overall.

Cotter Hamilton’s first-half goal gave Hockinson a 1-0 lead.
