EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — The city of Eugene has closed a portion of Scobert Park after receiving many reports of illicit activity.

The closure took effect last week and will last until April 22, 2012. People found in the park’s southern, fenced-off portion face a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Similar problems with drug use, illegal camping and other activities led the city to close a larger portion of the park back in September 1996. That closure lasted only 30 days.
