HOOD RIVER, Ore. (AP) — A fatal crash on Interstate 84 west of Hood River was witnessed by the weighmaster at a nearby truck weigh station.

He saw the pickup drift through the weigh station access lane Thursday and fly off the roadway into a tree.

Oregon State Police say the driver, 18-year-old Samuel Issac Elkins of Happy Valley, died after arriving at a Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital.

His 19-year-old cousin was a passenger in the pickup and suffered a minor injury. He said he was sleeping at the time.
