Woman fights city to save garden, property

LYNDEN, Wash. (AP) — An 84-year-old woman has been able to stave off the city of Lynden’s attempt to expand a city street onto her property and her beloved yard.

The Bellingham Herald reports that Marina Timmermans wrote in court filings that at her advanced age, her “greatest joy” is to work on her yard and garden.

The city wanted to expand a city street near her property, but in a recently agreed deal, the city said it would move the expansion 15 feet away from her land.

The dispute between the city and the Timmermans is not completely resolved, though. Timmermans wanted to sell parts of her 1.14 acres to fund her retirement, but the city sued her and her now-deceased husband because the developing her property would have inhibited plans to expand the street.

Timmermans and the city are now working on a settlement.
