Karen Schmaling has accepted the position of vice chancellor for academic affairs at Washington State University Vancouver, replacing five-year veteran Bruce Romanish.
Schmaling will start work on Aug. 16. A Pacific Northwest native, she most recently served as dean of the College of Health and Human Services at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
A UNC Charlotte campus newsletter reports that during her tenure, the HHS college had significant enrollment growth, acquired key program accreditations, expanded into doctoral education, increased research productivity and external funding and launched a new building, WSUV officials said on Monday.
Schmaling succeeds Romanish, who announced one year ago his plan to step down. He will serve as an administrative aid in academic affairs, re-engage his research work and prepare for a return to teaching in WSUV’s College of Education in fall of 2011.
Romanish previously served five years as associate dean at WSUV.
