A longtime Vancouver police officer, Andrew Young, died Friday while on an off-duty mountain biking excursion in the Hood River, Ore., area.
Young, 45, suffered a medical emergency, said Kim Kapp, spokeswoman for the Vancouver Police Department. She said Young’s family asked her not to specify what happened.
Young was hired here in February 1999 and, for nearly 7 years before that, had been an officer with the Honolulu Police Department.
In Vancouver, Young worked as a patrol officer and with the former bicycle patrol unit, Kapp said. The department currently has no full time bike unit, although officers occasionally ride bike patrols in summer, Kapp said.
“I think a lot of people will remember him from his time as a bicycle patrol officer downtown and in neighborhoods across the city,” Police Chief Cliff Cook said Tuesday. “He was a very well-liked bike officer.”
Cook said Young was “well-liked by his peers” and “very much a family-oriented man” with several children.
A public memorial service will begin at 4 p.m. Friday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 17010 N.E. Ninth St., north of Fisher’s Landing.
