SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Divine Fortune outran Arcadius and even-money favorite Slip Away inside the final fence and won the $75,000 A.P. Smithwick Memorial steeplechase Thursday at Saratoga Race Course.

Divine Fortune ran 2 1/16 miles in 3:59.97 over a rain-softened course and won by three-quarters of a length. Danielle Hodson rode the Jonathan Sheppard-trained 7-year-old gelding to victory.

The Smithwick was Divine Fortune’s second win in five starts this year and worth $45,000 to owner William Pape.

Divine Fortune returned $7.40, $3.60 and $3.10. Arcadius paid $4 and $2.40 and Slip Away paid $2.20 to show.
