EAST WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) — A fire started by lightning Tuesday rapidly burned through 2,000 acres of grass, brush and wheat and threatened some homes in a subdivision near East Wenatchee.
The Wenatchee World reports flames came within 400 yards of one house. Authorities knocked on the doors of about 50 homes in the Canyon Hills subdivision to advise residents they might have to evacuate.
Douglas County Fire District 2 spokeswoman Kay McKellar said the fire died down by 10 p.m. as winds decreased. A sheriff’s dispatcher said Wednesday morning that homes are no longer threatened.
The fire was one of several started Tuesday’s by lightning in Chelan and Douglas counties. Helicopters were called to the Canyon Hills fire from the ongoing operation at what’s called the Wenatchee River Complex fires.
