SEATTLE (AP) — An investigation by KING-TV found the Washington state ferry system has spent more than $2 million for generators that cannot be used as planned and consultants on the problem.
The station reports the state ordered nine generators in 2006 there were supposed to help save fuel. Engineers later learned connector cables could cause an electrical explosion.
Even after a design change, consultants said there was no fix.
Ferry Director David Mosely says safety is the system’s top priority.
Four of the nine generators are in a warehouse in Seattle and five more are going into storage at the manufacturer in Texas until the Washington state ferry system decides what to do with them.
