Mud flow damages Lakeshore Trail at Lake Chelan

STEHEKIN, Wash. (AP) — Heavy rain on Thursday led to flooding and a mud and debris flow that has damaged Lakeshore Trail in the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area.

Park officials say the debris flow washed out a bridge at Four Mile Creek. Hikers and animals can no longer access Lakeshore Trail at about three miles from Stehekin.

Fire officials remind people that floods and debris flows are an expected regular result from a significant storm after a wild fire. That’s because little water can be absorbed in the soil, causing rapid runoff that converges in drainage areas.
