ELMA, Wash. (AP) — Authorities investigating the shooting of a 6-year-old Mason County boy now believe it was his 8-year-old brother who shot him.

On Tuesday Mason County Sheriff’s deputies said the 6-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the face with a pistol he had retrieved from a locked safe in his Elma home.

Chief Deputy Dean Byrd said Wednesday that new forensic evidence points to the 8-year-old brother as the shooter.

The 6-year-old boy is in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
