Federal government withdraws trash shipping permit

HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture has withdrawn the permit needed for a company to ship Oahu’s trash to a Washington state landfill.

Acting Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell said Monday it has become increasingly difficult to ship trash outside of the islands.

He says the city and county of Honolulu will have to consider other solutions.

The USDA suspended the garbage shipping permit Friday following environmental concerns by the Yakama Nation, the tribe that owns land around the Roosevelt, Washington landfill. A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order last month effectively blocking the first shipment.

Honolulu lawyers are negotiating with Hawaiian Waste Systems LLC to end their trash shipping contract.
