ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) — Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Caldwell remains committed to Curtis Painter as Peyton Manning’s backup quarterback.

Painter threw three interceptions in Sunday’s 37-17 preseason loss to San Francisco. Caldwell says some dropped passes and breakdowns in protection hurt Painter’s cause. Caldwell says some of the criticism Painter has received is unfair, but that it comes with the position.

Tom Brandstater threw a touchdown pass and an interception against San Francisco as the No. 3 quarterback. Caldwell wouldn’t say how much or in what order Painter and Brandstater would play in Thursday’s game against Buffalo in Toronto.
