NEW YORK (AP) — Carlos Guillen has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Detroit Tigers because he has a deep bruise on his left knee.

The second baseman was hurt Monday night and missed Tuesday night’s game against the Yankees after he was taken out on a hard slide at the end of Detroit’s 3-1 win over New York.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth Monday night, Brett Gardner slid into Guillen’s legs in an attempt to break up the double play. Guillen saw Gardner coming but didn’t attempt to avoid him as he threw to first to retire Derek Jeter and end the game.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland says Guillen “stood in there and took it like a man.”

Detroit recalled infielder Will Rhymes from Triple-A Toledo.
