Washington students beat national average on ACT

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — For the seventh straight year, Washington students beat the national average on the ACT exam.

According to scores released Wednesday, Washington students who took the college entrance exam tied for eighth with Delaware. One of every six Washington 12th graders in the class of 2010 took the test during the 2009-2010 school year. They averaged a composite score of 23, compared with the national average of 21.

The curriculum-based exam tests students in English, reading, math and science and they can earn up to a score of 36.

Nearly 10,000 Washington students also took the optional ACT writing test, averaging a composite score of 23.1 compared to the national average of 21.4.
