NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Caroline Wozniacki (wohz-nee-AK’-ee) has won the U.S. Open Series without taking the court.

Wozniacki’s opponent in the Pilot Pen quarterfinals, Flavia Pennetta, withdrew from the tournament Thursday afternoon with an injury to her right foot.

By moving into the semifinals, Wozniacki clinches the Open Series, and is eligible to win an extra $1 million should she win next week’s U.S. Open, where she is the top seed.

In another quarterfinal Thursday, a battle of two Russian stars went to Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 6-3 over Dinara Safina (din-NAH’-ruh sah-FEE’-nah).

In the first men’s quarterfinal match, Thiemo De Bakker of the Netherlands beat Evgeny Korolov of Kazakstan, 6-4, 6-2.
