MIAMI (AP) — Hurricane Danielle has weakened to a Category 1 storm, the lowest on the scale, as it speeds deeper into the open Atlantic far offshore.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami reported at 5 a.m. EDT Sunday that maximum sustained winds had ebbed to near 90 mph (150 kph) as Danielle lost bluster. The storm had been a Category 2 hurricane on Saturday with sustained winds of 105 mph (165 kph) before starting to lose strength.
The center says Danielle was about 440 miles (710 kilometers) east of Bermuda and picking up speed while heading northeast at 21 mph (33 kph).
Elsewhere in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Earl neared hurricane strength with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (105 kph). A hurricane warning was in effect for several islands in the eastern Caribbean.
